Cultural Pubic Hair Removal
Some religions view pubic hair on a woman as unclean. Orthodox Jews and Muslims require, even today, the removal of a womanÂ's body hair before ritual cleansing. Ancient Egyptian men and women depilated themselves for aesthetic and hygienic reasons.
Ancient Greek and Roman men, although commonly very hairy, were depicted in statues and sculptures as having no body hair at all. Hairlessness was an ideal that represented eternal youth and sensuality.
In Medieval times, a ladyÂ's pubic hair was removed dutifully by her handmaiden lest the lady be considered unclean or of poor status.
